City May Add Stop Signs to Fight Rideout Avenue Speeding

Featured, Politics

LEWISTON- After several failed attempts at reducing speeding on Rideout Avenue, the city will consider adding stop signs at the intersection with Fisher Avenue.

The City Council will vote on the measure at their February 17th meeting.

The request, which will make that intersection a four-way stop, is supported by both the Police and Public Works departments.

Rideout Avenue is located off of Sabattus Street, east of Thorne’s Corner

Writing in a memo dated January 30, 2026, Lewiston Police Department Lt. Tyler Michaud said that the city has tried to reduce speeding in multiple ways, but that it remains persistent.

Past efforts have included increasing the speed signage and painted traffic lines, installing an electronic speed measurement sign, increased police enforcement, and the use of the department’s speed warning trailer.

“Despite these efforts, residents still report seeing speeding vehicles,” the memo states, adding, “this is supported by video evidence captured by the residents.”

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices advises against using stop signs as a way of slowing traffic, but, the memo states, “the police department feels that this placement would be an acceptable deviation from standard practice given the already exhausted efforts and still existing problem.”
