LEWISTON- The City Council has unanimously approved increasing the fines for parking violations.
Police Chief Carley Conley presented the proposal at the February 3rd Council meeting.
“We really haven’t seen them adjusted since 2012,” Conley stated. “We’re looking to just increase the fines to make them more comparable with other municipalities.”

Even with the updates, Lewiston’s fine amounts are still under most other Maine cities and towns, Conley said.
The new amounts will take effect on July 1st, and the city will undergo a public awareness campaign before implementation. Money collected from parking fines goes to the city’s General Fund.
All coin-operated meters were removed by the city last year. The city currently employs only one Parking Enforcement Officer.
